Materials
Jingle Bells, wrist bells, and jingle sticks
Rhythm Poster #1: Ti-Ti Ta Ti-Ti Ta
Rhythm Poster #2: Ta Rest Ta Rest
Instructions
Distribute jingle bell instruments. Review how to play them, if needed. Echo-clap, echo-pat, and echo-tap the following rhythms.
Ti-Ti Ta Ti-Ti Ta. (Think "jingle bells.")
Ta Rest Ta Rest (Think "stomp.")
Listen to the song. Review the words to "Jingle Bells," if needed. Note: Long ago when there were no street lights, jingle bells were worn on horses so that they would be heard when traveling at night. ASK What is a one horse open sleigh? Discuss together.
Sing along to the traditional melody of "Jingle Bells" only, then pause to add a partner dance.
Review Rhythm Poster #1. Choose a partner. Clap own hands (Ti-Ti Ta), clap partner's hands (Ti-Ti Ta), clap own hands again (Ti-Ti Ta) and clap partner's hands again (Ti-Ti Ta). This rhythm pattern will accompany Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!
For Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh. Hey! partners will hold hands and walk or skip in a circle with each other.
Try the entire "Jingle Bell" melody with the partner dance.
Echo-speak these words: Jingle bell! Jingle bell! Jingle bell stomp! Jingle bell! Jingle bell! Jingle bell stomp!
Display the Rhythm Poster #2. Practice walking forward to this rhythm with the dance: Ta, Rest, Ta, Rest, Ta, Rest, Ta (Stomp), Rest. Then, repeat by moving backwards. (If eager feet would like to jump on the stomp, that is ok.)
Stand in a circle with everyone. Practice walking forward three steps, then stomping on word stomp. Then, walk backward three steps and stomp on the word stomp again.
Echo-sing these words: Shuffle to the left, then clap your hands two times. Shuffle to the right, and clap your hands two times. Shuffle to the left, and clap your hands two times. Now shuffle to the right, alright! And stomp with all your might!
Practice joining hands with everyone and walking in a circle (to the left), then clapping your hands two times. Change directions and do the same thing. (Repeat all again.)
Try singing and dancing to the entire song. (If there is trouble moving from partners to a full circle, pause the music, if needed.) The choreography video featuring John Jacobson is also available to watch under the Video tab on the EEMC website.
Perform this fun song while wearing jingle bell wrist bells for some festive sounds!
