Listen to this song about Spring. Answer the following questions.
What kinds of animals are in the song? (bunny, chick, duck and cow)
What does each animal do? (The bunny hops. The chick chirps. The duck quacks. The cow moos.)
Can you move like each animal? Answers may vary.
While listening to the song again, challenge students to demonstrate how each animal moves. Encourage free movement around the room, being careful not to bump into other people or objects.
Assign certain movements to each animal, then practice with the recording. If desired, line up in a "Follow the Leader" line with a student who is certain of each movement.
Hop like a bunny.
Move wings like a chick.
Shake tail feathers like a duck coming out of the water.
Move your mouth like a cow mooing.
Assign percussion instruments to play three quarter notes for each animal in a barnyard band. Distribute instruments to the students and practice with the recording.
Drums = bunnies
Maracas = chicks
Rhythm sticks = ducks
Cowbells (or triangles) = cows
Divide the class into two groups to perform the song: Active Animals and Barnyard Band. The Active Animals will sing and move in a circle around the band. The Barnyard Band will sing and play their instruments. If time permits, switch groups and perform again.
A suggested choreography is listed on the piano accompaniment.
