Instructions
Sit in a circle. Listen to the song while passing a toy bugle (or a ball) to the steady beat. At the end, can you answer these questions?
Did a woodwind instrument or a brass instrument play the solo at the beginning of the song? (brass)
What kind of brass instrument? (bugle or trumpet)
What is the difference between a bugle and a trumpet? (A bugle does not have valves or keys)
What is the name of the song that the bugler played to wake soldiers in the morning? ("Reveille")
This song was originally performed in 1941 by the Andrews Sisters to entertain soldiers. Which war was being fought when this was sung? (World War II)
Echo-sing each phrase until students are familiar with both verses, as well as the ending.
Display the four bugle icons. Choose a rhythm instrument to keep the steady beat as a volunteer points to the steady beat icons. When ready, keep the steady beat accompaniment with the recording.
Move to a simple 2-part body percussion accompaniment: Keep the steady beat in your feet as you say "I like swing mu(sic)." This time, snap your fingers on the "sic" of music.
Transfer this accompaniment to rhythm instruments. Choose which instruments will keep the steady beat and which will play only on the upbeat of "sic."
Perform with the recording.
Optional challenge: Move to a 3-part body percussion accompaniment. Try each rhythm alone, then divide into three groups to layer the rhythms.
Clap: Ta, Ta, Ta, Rest. (Think the words: "Bu-gle Boy....")
Tap feet: Rest Rest EighthRest Ti-Ti-Ti Ta. (Think the words: "and he was gone")
Transfer this accompaniment to rhythm instruments. Practice each rhythm alone, then try layering.
Perform with the recording.
